Divine timing is something I never could quite get a handle on. Until one day I had an image of a chess board and it seemed to make sense. I've been learning about time in general from a spiritual perspective. This has helped me find peace in many areas of my life in which I was trying too hard to control.
When someone would say, "Things happen in divine timing," I thought it was up to some spirit. Some celestial being was waiting until the right moment to say go. I would have to be patient and wait on that unknown.
The unknown has always given me a bit of anxiety so I asked for a better explanation of it. A chess board came to mind and I understood. I don't play chess, but I know enough to grasp the analogy.
If my life is a game of chess, things don't happen according to a clock, but according to the pieces on the board. One piece can't move until another one does. Pieces can only move in a particular direction and they're dependent on the other pieces on the board. Divine timing is what happens when all the pieces are in the right places.
The only way to lose the game is to give up (to forfeit) or to die (for the clock to run out). Waiting on divine timing isn't sitting around, waiting for something to happen. Divine timing is moving my pieces around the board until they're in position.
My task is not one of waiting, but action. When we "wait" on divine timing, it's only waiting for the blocking of the king. This can only happen when we've made all the right moves. This could be learning the skills needed for that job you want. It could be healing wounds that are blocking you from becoming a person who's ready for the relationship you want.
Whatever it is you're waiting for, don't wait. Start moving pieces and watch instead of wait. You may have also heard the phrase, "God helps those who help themselves," which I've always hated, but here it makes sense. You are the one who makes things happen. Divine timing is you aligning with the thing that's meant for you. You aren't waiting—what you want is waiting for YOU.
